My Latest Endeavor

Comics, Improvements

I’ve been posting some infrequent comics at Journey Into Mediocrity, but I think it’s pretty clear that, while some of them are fun, and I do enjoy making them, my heart really isn’t in doing those sort of one-off (alleged) humor comics. (Which is not to say that I’m going to stop doing it.)

I mostly post them for the sake of having something posted here, as I continue to work on recruiting other creators to take advantage of what OpenDoor Comics has to offer.

In any case, more straightforward, serialized comics are what my heart is in, and so, at last, I’ve decided to take a crack at it.

In the gallery below is a preview of that crack, a comic called Wargod: Worldtamer.

Soon, I will create a separate site to house the adventures of the titular Wargod, which will be regularly-updated with new chapters as the story progresses.

Take a look at the teaser below, which is a bit NSFW, due to some blood/gore:

A few things to note.

While many writers focus on writing to their strengths, here, I’m writing to my weaknesses. Thus, while it may seem like a bit of a cheat, there’s a reason that the style is inconsistent and simplistic with some especially dodgy attempts at human anatomy (beyond the fact that I am an inconsistent artist and that I’m doing this whole thing all by my lonesome). There’s also a reason why, in some parts, it isn’t so inconsistent, simplistic, or dodgy.

All will be revealed in time…assuming anyone is interested.

Which leads to the real point, which is that in order for this to be something that I continue working on, I need a little more motivation than just finally working on something that’s been kicking around in my head since the early nineties.

And I’m not just talking about money. I’m looking for a general feeling of reader engagement, with feedback and discussion, particularly around questions of presentation and scheduling.

For example, going forward, how often would you want to see new material? Would you want new pages posted as they’re finished, or would you want something more complete, like a full chapter? Even more complete than that?

And how about presentation? There’s obviously a lot of room for improvement in user experience, so I’m open to suggestions on that front.

But, with that said, yeah, money is an issue, too, so I would really appreciate any financial support anyone can provide – which will not only go towards maybe keeping me from having to get a “real” job, thereby giving me more time to work on this, but also towards investments in the underlying platform of OpenDoor Comics, and possibly towards bringing on board some collaborators to help make the comic better.

So, whitelist this site and all sub-sites in your ad-blocker, consider making a donation, or become a Patron on Patreon. (It’s worth noting that early access to new material will be one of the perks of becoming a Patron).

Anyway, I hope you’ve enjoyed this little preview, and are interested in seeing more. (Because there’s a whole lot more up here in my noggin.)

  1. I don’t know if I’d like to wait for an entire chapter to be done, but a few pages at a time would be cool, especially if they end at a logical point or somewhere enticing.

    1. That’s pretty much what I’ve been leaning towards, but that still leaves the question of presentation open. Do I stick with something like this gallery format and post multiple pages in chunks? Just drop the pages all into one post? Still some thinking to do, is my point.

  2. This seems very promising so far. As for posting: it depends on the story’s flow. Comics like Girl Genius or Order of the Stick make sure that each page is complete. If that works for your story, you can update a page at a time. If not, you should probably post them in bunches.
