The confusion was due to the issue in question having a main story entitled &#8220;The Colossus of Shem,&#8221; whereas the issue I picked up had a main story entitled &#8220;The Colossus of Argos.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"474\" height=\"644\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.opendoor-comics.com\/unbagged\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/97\/2025\/05\/SSOC80.jpg?resize=474%2C644&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3175\" style=\"width:530px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.opendoor-comics.com\/unbagged\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/97\/2025\/05\/SSOC80.jpg?w=474&amp;ssl=1 474w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.opendoor-comics.com\/unbagged\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/97\/2025\/05\/SSOC80.jpg?resize=221%2C300&amp;ssl=1 221w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">#80, my actual first issue of <em>Savage Sword of Conan<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the next few years from that point on I would semi-regularly pick up new issues <em>SSoC<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike most regular comics, which were not always consistently available at the places where I got comics, I probably could have picked up every new issue of the black-and-white magazine, as it was always in stock at my local K-Mart, but at $1.50 a pop I couldn&#8217;t always convince my mom to let me add it to the shopping cart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thus, I missed #81, but picked up #82, which is the subject of this post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"543\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.opendoor-comics.com\/unbagged\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/97\/2025\/05\/ssoc82.jpg?resize=400%2C543&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3177\" style=\"width:530px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.opendoor-comics.com\/unbagged\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/97\/2025\/05\/ssoc82.jpg?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.opendoor-comics.com\/unbagged\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/97\/2025\/05\/ssoc82.jpg?resize=221%2C300&amp;ssl=1 221w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">I had forgotten what the cover looked like; more than anything else in my collection, issues of <em>SSoC<\/em> tended to lose their covers quickly.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because it was a magazine, <em>SSoC<\/em> didn&#8217;t fall under the purview of the Comics Code Authority the way all of the other comics I read did and was therefore not bound by its strictures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"280\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.opendoor-comics.com\/unbagged\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/97\/2025\/05\/95233-170016-comics-code-authorit.jpg?resize=280%2C340&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3178\" style=\"width:240px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.opendoor-comics.com\/unbagged\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/97\/2025\/05\/95233-170016-comics-code-authorit.jpg?w=280&amp;ssl=1 280w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.opendoor-comics.com\/unbagged\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/97\/2025\/05\/95233-170016-comics-code-authorit.jpg?resize=247%2C300&amp;ssl=1 247w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Not <em>this <\/em>mag, bub.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This meant that Conan&#8217;s black-and-white adventures were less restrained than his four-color adventures, and while the writers and artists didn&#8217;t necessarily go all-out, they did tend to include themes and scenes that wouldn&#8217;t be too likely to appear in a Code-approved book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like the panel that is the subject of this post, the fifth and final panel of the 18th page, in the main story entitled, &#8220;Devil in the Dark,&#8221; line meant, and it burned itself into my brain for being so overtly sexual. (And also creepy.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Really, some of the panels that followed it, which featured ample amounts of the young woman&#8217;s uncovered skin, probably should have stood out for me more, but that crude line about what the two &#8220;jackal-spawn&#8221;
