“A stoic male lead who’s struggling against some inner darkness.” …Yeesh<\/em><\/strong>. That could be anyone<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

As they did with previous crossovers, Marvel and DC have put out digital-only crossovers as companion pieces to the physical comics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn’t continue my free trial of Marvel Unlimited, so I can’t post about Marvel’s offering pairing Jeff the Land Shark and Aquaman, but I do<\/em> have access to DC’s offering, so let’s take a look at the team up of the Girl of Steel and the Daywalker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the two seem like an especially odd couple, blame it on the algorithm, because that’s what led otherdimensional programming director Mojo to bring the two together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After selecting Supergirl as the “strong female lead who’s perpetually a damsel in distress” and plunking her down in the woods with a kryptonite infection, his choice of male lead is made by the algorithmically selected antagonist: vampires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What other character could meet the required criteria in this situation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supergirl initially objects to all the apparent murder, but in here weakened state there’s not much she can do about it, and she can’t really argue when Blade points out that they’re vampires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the initial threat is dealt with, introductions are in order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The pair soon discover that they are on a soundstage and that Mojo is behind it all. Initially, they refuse to play their part in Mojo’s little show, but once Mojo starts threatening to harm civilians, they realize that they have no choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, that doesn’t mean they’re out of options, and the two put on an act while putting on an act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They deliver the tension that Mojo demands, arguing about the morality of killing, and about whether Blade truly is any different than the monsters he fights, leading him to appear to give in to his dark side, though the end result isn’t what Mojo was hoping for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once her powers are restored, Supergirl could teach the most difficult of Hollywood prima donnas a thing or two about being impossible to work with, and so the creative differences between the stars and the director become insurmountable, and Mojo is forced to admit that there is no way for production to continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As with the other crossover entries put out in this vertical-scrolling format, the story is very slight and very fast-paced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While it is a cute enough story for what it is, it feels like a waste of potential to use Mojo here rather than saving him for some other more significant crossover event, ideally one that features some of the characters with whom he typically interacts and that pairs him up with someone who is something of a DC counterpart, like Bat-Mite or Mr. Mxyzptlk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now that I think about it, a Blue Devil\/Longshot crossover featuring Mojo as the antagonist could have been amazing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ah well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m not sure if Supergirl’s history – in her civilian identity of Linda Danvers – of being an actress on a soap opera in the Bronze Age provided any inspiration for this story, but I would have liked to have seen some nods to that here. Even just a throwaway line about having some acting experience when she and Blade decide to play along with Mojo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On a similar note, there were some nods to it with the algorithm stuff, but there was a real opportunity to provide a bit of a critique of contemporary programming and content consumption that could have fleshed out the story a bit more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m not familiar with Hugo Petrius, but the finishes are clean and simple, building on what I assume was, based on what I’ve seen of his art, the solid foundation laid by the always great Jan\u00edn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My one complaint in terms of the overall look is that unlike the other digital-only crossovers, this one didn’t really do much to take advantage of the format, but that’s a minor quibble. It’s not a story that really lent itself to doing anything particularly unusual with the layout in the way that, for example, the Flash\/FF story <\/a>did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, if there had been more of a deep dive into modern content production and consumption, there could have been some opportunities for clever social media-inspired – and in particular, short-form video – layouts and transitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, I think I actually would have preferred that this one had been in the print comic and that one of the stories from that had taken its place as a digital exclusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
