Jon Says:

I just watched the Injustice animated movie the other day, which is my first real exposure to that universe. We’ll see how things go with Jon (Kent, not Maki) being there. It’s interesting in that in some ways Injustice Superman has done some of the things that Jon wishes his dad had done and wants to do himself in terms of being more directly involved with the world, but he definitely isn’t going to approve of what this Superman has done to make the world a “better” place.

Auto-added at the shop because I read his last series. I actually had no idea this was even going to be a thing. Guess we’ll see what it’s like and if I’ll continue on with it after this issue.

Jon Says:

Honestly, Jon doesn’t say much on this one. It’s been a solidly enjoyable series, with plenty of twists and turns that keep you – or at least me – guessing.

#2A

Gisele Lagace Regular

Release: Jun 07, 2023

Vault Comics

Stuck on a mining platform whizzing through space, the XXX-plorers are attacked by a whole bunch of characters we were only able to put in the book because we’re calling this a “Porn Parody” and, apparently, you can do whatever the hell you want once you make it super clear (we’re making it super clear) that this is parody! Meanwhile, indie comix darling Cherry Popstar has been turned into a bored billionaire’s personal pet AI, and she has some ideas about how to, like, run the universe!

I know I said I was going to tradewait on this, but as with the first issue, I wanted this variant. How could I say no to Cherry Poptart herself?

Once Upon a Time at The End of The World

#6A

Kevin Wada Regular

Release: Jun 07, 2023

Mezzy and Maceo found the unimaginable-a secluded suburban community, well-preserved and filled with everything they’d need to survive until adulthood. As adults, however, the highest highs of romance and contentment are shadowed by dysfunction, just as their quaint community is surrounded by the ever-present horrors of the wasteland.   How long can their little piece of paradise last?

Peacemaker Tries Hard!

#2D

Kris Anka Movie Poster Variant

Release: Jun 06, 2023

Cover: Aug 2023

The Brain has given Peacemaker no choice but to complete a dangerous mission on his behalf, but he won’t have to kick bad-guy butt on his own. With Monsieur Mallah at his side, Peacemaker breaks into the secret base of General Immortus to steal some super-villain DNA. What starts as the team-up you never knew you wanted takes a surprising turn that could leave Peacemaker facedown in a pool of his own blood!

Jon Says:

It’s interesting to see Peacemaker go from being obscure – even to me; I’d read very little featuring the character until his recent ascent – to being something of a marquee character. The characterization here is much more like his movie and TV counterpart than it is to how he was when last I saw him in the comics, but that works for me. Also, like any good comic-buyer in the Silver Age, I couldn’t resist a cover with a gorilla on it.

Shazam!, Vol. 4

#2A

Dan Mora Regular

Release: Jun 06, 2023

Cover: Aug 2023

Shazam versus S-H-A-Z-A-M! Billy Batson was given the powers of the gods by the Wizard Shazam–but Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury never gave the Wizard their permission. Displeased with how Billy is representing them, the disgruntled gods engage in a six-way fight for sole control of the World’s Mightiest Mortal…or, if they get their way, the World’s Mightiest Puppet. May the craftiest god win!

Jon Says:

Another case of the characterization being closer to his movie counterpart, but here it works less well for me than it does with Peacemaker. I don’t know. I see where Waid’s going with this, and how he’s trying to bring back some of the style of the character’s original adventures – with, of course, a modern sensibility, as is the way with things with Waid – and I’ll continue to give it a chance just because I’m glad someone is doing something different with Billy than what’s been done for the past dozen years or so, but so far I’m not really feeling it.

Steelworks

#1B

Jon Bogdanove Variant

Steel–and his company, Steelworks…and who possesses secrets that could undo everything John has worked so hard to build? While John’s professional life is firing on all cylinders, his personal life is even better, as his on-again, off-again relationship with Lana Lang might be back on, permanently. Now he must decide whether it’s time to give up being Steel once and for all. But does John even know who he would be without his superhero identity? How does the other Steel–John’s niece, Natasha Irons–feel about his momentous decision? And does any of that matter if Steelworks crumbles around him when he lacks the superpowers to fight back? Writer Michael Dorn (the voice of Steel in Superman: The Animated Series) teams up with artist Sami Basri (Harley Quinn, Catwoman) to bring you the next chapter of Steel’s saga in this not-to-be missed six-issue miniseries!

Jon Says:

It’s John Henry Irons, in his own book, written by his voice actor. Of course I’m going to support a Steel book, especially one written by Worf himself. Honor demands it.
