The Haul For 5.30.26
Two years ago, I went to a small local con with a terrible name.
I didn’t go last year, and hadn’t intended to go this year, as I don’t really have the money to go digging in bins, but when I went to the comic shop this past Wednesday, the owner offered me a free pass, so I figured I might as well.
I was kind of put off by the fact that I could not for the life of me find the names of any comic creators on the guest list. Most every guest was an actor or voice actor.
I guess that RWBY was a sponsor of the event, so there were a lot of VAs from that, and if I were a fan of that, or Supernatural or any of the various flavors of Power Rangers, I might have been more excited.
Once I got there, I saw that they did have a handful of comics creators, though – and this is in no way intended to throw shade – no one I was particularly interested in meeting. In a couple of cases, if I’d known they were going to be there, I would have brought some specific works for them to sign.
But without having that personal connection, I didn’t really feel compelled to buy something just for them to sign. I did consider getting a sketch from one or two of them, but when I thought about it, they were gone from their tables, and I didn’t feel like hanging around much longer.
When I initially arrived, I looked to find where my comic shop was set up. At the last one I went to, they were front and center, but I couldn’t find them anywherer.
Turns out that’s because they weren’t there. I spotted the shop owner walking about and talked to him and he said they just didn’t have the people to cover it.
Overall, I wasn’t impressed by what I found in the bins, though I did manage to spend some money. If I were more into toys and collectibles, I might have had a better time and spent more money.
I also didn’t take any pictures as I’m always bad at that anyway, though I do wish I had gotten a picture of the cosplayer who did a phenomenal job as The Bride from DC’s Creature Commandos.
While looking through the bins, I did find a copy of Superman’s Girl Friend Lois Lane #2, which is one of the two issues I still need, but the price was too high for me in the condition it was in.
But I did end up filling in some of the gap between #30 and #50 of The Warlord...

I also picked up a classic that I undoubtedly have collected in something, but felt like I might as well own as an individual issue.

In general, I’m not really much of a “con guy” anyway, especially when the con isn’t really tailored to my interests.
But hey, at least I didn’t have to pay to get in.
