Sometimes – all the time, if you’re me – you see something that you don’t need yet you must have.

Thus…

As a kid, I remember seeing ads for this comic in Comics Scene and wanting it because Mike Grell, but nothing from Pacific Comics ever found its way into any of the retail outlets from which I got comics.

However, Mike Grell isn’t the (only) reason I picked up this set once I saw it available for what seemed a reasonable price, but rather what was included, which was the thing I really didn’t need yet had to have.

Yes, that’s right – the Rocketeer made his debut in a preview in the pages of Starslayer.

I didn’t know that at the time, especially since, up until stories about the then-upcoming Rocketeer movie started popping up, I was only dimly aware of the character’s existence.

(And even that awareness was largely limited to having seen a certain poster in the pages of a Bud Plant catalog that caught the eye of young Jon and now hangs on old Jon’s wall and can be seen if he looks up from where he is writing this.)

But that was the main reason I picked up these issues, though, as mentioned, I didn’t actually need them for that, given what I already have.

Of course, there is a bonus – besides the Mike Grell content – to having these issues that I hadn’t noticed when I ordered them from AMCOMICSALES.

This guy also made his first appearance in these pages.

I also remember seeing the ad for that comic in Comics Scene back in the day. However, I was able to get a version of those comics via the Marvel editions of it that were available where I got my comics.

In any case, that’s the latest entry in the Mail Call. More things are almost always on the way – there are so many things I don’t need that I have to have, after all – so check back soon to see what arrives next.

Born and raised in the sparsely populated Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Jon Maki developed an enduring love for comics at an early age.
