Barbarella: The Center Cannot Hold

#4A

Derrick Chew Regular

Release: May 31, 2023

Prepare to enter the ultimate unknown! Barbarella, Vix and Taln know where to go to discover the galactic secrets of the Unnamable. Unfortunately, that means travelling beyond the edge of our galaxy and into the next – assuming they survive the termination shock on the way through! It’s a massive risk, but the chance to avert a galactic war that would kill trillions makes the lives of two females and a male hologram seem small by comparison – though maybe not to them!

Jon Says:

This is a habit more than anything. I enjoyed the run that Carey did several years back, and I’ve ended up just buying each new run that’s come out – with different creative teams – since. It’s not bad, it’s just not something I’m excited about. Mainly, they just auto-add it at the shop whenever a new run comes out because I’ve bought the previous runs, and then I keep thinking, “I should drop this,” and then the run ends because they typically only go for five issues. And then I forget, a new run starts, it gets auto-added, I reflexively buy it because it’s in my stack, and on it goes…

City Boy

#1A

Minkyu Jung & Sunny Gho Regular

Release: May 23, 2023

First seen in Wildstorm 30th Anniversary Special and Lazarus Planet: Legends Reborn, there’s a new Korean hero named…City Boy! Or at least, that’s the best translation of what the cities call him. City Boy, a.k.a. Cameron Kim, is just trying to make a living by using his powers of being able to speak to cities to find lost and hidden goods to pawn, and it’s only just enough to get by. And those abilities mean he hears everything everywhere all the time, including each city’s histories and the truths behind them. (It’s very loud in his head and something he has to live with.) As his powers get stronger, the cities start forming animal avatars from scraps in order to physically travel alongside him on his adventures. Of course, Gotham is a rat avatar made of city scraps, but what about Metropolis, Blüdhaven, Amnesty Bay, or even Themyscira? And not all cities are so kind…

If you consider yourself to be in any way an ally – or at very least a decent human being – don’t stop at saying “Love is love” or buying (important) works like this. Focus on combatting the horrifying rhetoric, violence, and legislation targeting our friends and family.

#1A

Adam Hughes Regular

Release: May 31, 2023

It’s a wall-to-wall adventure in a trio of Rocketeer stories in this terrific all-new special! Second, Robert Windom (Seven Sons) and Jae Lee craft a story of the Rocketeer fighting a Japanese Zero in the South Pacific. And the third entry is by Kelvin Mao (director of the Dave Stevens documentary Drawn To Perfection, and co-writer of Seven Sons) and artist extraordinaire Craig Cermak. While on a date with Betty, our man Cliff encounters a vaguely familiar adventurer/archeologist. What kind of trouble will this spell for our hero? You’ll have to grab a copy of this special one-off issue to find out!
